Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghan Attack

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and another wounded in an improvised-explosive-device attack in Afghanistan today.

Officials said the attack occurred in Uruzgun province in central Afghanistan. The wounded soldier is in stable condition at a local U.S. medical facility.

In other news, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials praised the Afghan government for its efforts in the successful release of three U.N. election workers.

Press accounts said the hostages were released during a rescue operation and that the government managed to release them without making any deals with the kidnappers. One kidnapper was killed and four others wounded, Afghan officials said.

While coalition forces did help in the search for the three workers, the Afghan government did the heavy lifting, officials said. "We commend the government of Afghanistan for its effective pursuit of the kidnappers," officials said during a press conference.

The workers, held for 27 days by anti-coalition elements, "showed commendable courage and resolve" during their ordeal, officials said.

The three workers, Annetta Flanigan from Northern Ireland, Shqipe Habibi from Kosovo and Filipino diplomat Angelito Nayan, were abducted at gunpoint Oct. 28 in Kabul.

In other areas of Afghanistan, there were rocket attacks on two U.S. bases during the night. The first attack was at Orgun-e, with four rockets being launched at a forward operating base. All four impacted in the town. One Afghan was killed and one was wounded.

Anti-coalition forces also launched four rockets at Bagram Air Base. All landed outside the base, and there were no casualties.
