Alaskan Military Get Extension to File for Dividend Payment

Eligible Alaskan service members serving overseas in support of the war on terrorism who were denied state dividend payments because of late filing will get another opportunity to receive the payment, according to an Alaska Department of Revenue release.

Thanks to a bill passed this year by the Alaskan state legislature, the release stated, state residents in the military and veterans who were eligible for hostile fire or imminent danger pays will be allowed to file an application for 2003 and 2004 dividends within 90 days after the last day the member was eligible for such pay.

Since 1982, eligible Alaska residents could apply for payment of an annual permanent fund dividend. Payments were disbursed from a savings account established in 1976 using a portion of royalties paid to the state from oil production on state land.

The Permanent Fund Dividend Division will contact people whose 2003 or 2004 applications were denied due to late filing to determine their eligibility, according to the release. Those who qualify may apply for a prior year dividend and must demonstrate reasonable cause for the delay in applying for that dividend.

In 2003, more than $600 million in PFD payments were disbursed to about 594,000 Alaskans at about $1,107 per individual payment.
