A pickup truck exploded early today near the Iraqi city of Mosul, killing three Iraqi civilians and wounding six coalition troops, according to a U.S. military press release.
The truck was loaded with rockets and mortars that didn't detonate when the vehicle blew up. News reports say the truck's driver perished in the explosion.
An Iraqi child was among the civilians killed in the attack that occurred outside the Mosul airfield, according to the release. Press reports noted three U.S. soldiers and three Iraqi guards were wounded in the assault.
In other news, U.S. and Iraqi National Guard and police forces battled with insurgents July 25 outside the Iraqi city of Burhitz, north of Baghdad, according to another U.S. military press release. The Iraqi forces killed 13 insurgents during the fighting.
American 1st Infantry Division soldiers taking part in the Burhitz fight provided aerial observation and artillery support to the Iraqi forces. The insurgents left leaving Burhitz in the hands of Iraqi forces.
No American or Iraqi casualties occurred during the battle.
After the fight U.S. troops found and seized assorted rockets, mortars and grenade launchers believed to have previously belonged to the insurgents.
In another July 25 event, U.S. 1st Infantry Division soldiers captured 15 individuals during a raid near Mandeli, Iraq, according to another U.S. news release.
The raid was conducted to capture members of the Jihad Taheed terrorist cell, according to the release. The American troops also seized automatic rifles and assorted ammunition during the raid.
A U.S. Marine died July 24 from wounds received the previous day in action in Anbar province.
In other news, U.S. military officials in Baghdad report that Iraqi police and National Guard forces, supported by coalition troops, found vehicle-born improvised explosive devices in the northern Iraq province of Ninevah earlier this month.
The counterinsurgency missions, according to the U.S. press release, were part of an aggressive stance taken by the Ninevah police chief. "We were able to capture a lot of weapons and explosives, and we also captured a terrorist gang that included two Iranians. In another raid we found the leader of a terrorists gang," said Maj. Gen. Mohammad Barhawi, the chief of police for the Ninevah province.
The raids, conducted July 1-12 in Mosul, focused on finding insurgents responsible for a spate of attacks in the country's northern region. as Along with the raids, aggressive Iraqi police patrolling on the streets of Mosul led to the discovery of three car bombs on July 11, 17 and 22.
The raids yielded a bounty of weapons: two SA-7 launchers-low-altitude, shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile systems equipped with six missiles, 20 rockets, 10 rifles, and 45 grenades. A criminal gang responsible for thefts in the area was also apprehended during the raids.
"We saved many innocent people from death," Barhawi said.
