Several coalition soldiers were killed today in an accident during engineering work at an ammunition and explosive storage facility near Suwayrah, Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported.
The news release contained neither details of the accident nor any numbers of soldiers killed or injured, but said the medical evacuation of casualties is ongoing and the accident is being investigated. Officials will notify the defense ministries of countries with soldiers affected by the explosion before releasing specific casualty information, the release added.
Media outlets, citing military sources in Iraq, reported that a car-bomb explosion outside a U.S. base in Baqubah killed one U.S. soldier and an Iraqi. Ten Americans and six Iraqis reportedly were wounded.
Nine Iraqi civilians were killed and 25 were wounded today when a car bomb exploded near city hall in downtown Mosul, Iraq, another news release from coalition forces said. Initial reports had indicated as many as 10 people had died and that some 100 were wounded.
No structural damage to the city hall building was reported, but there is significant damage to buildings in the immediate blast area, the news release said, and nine vehicles at the scene caught fire.
The target of the car bomb attack, officials said, was a convoy that included two members of the Ninevah Provincial Council and Mosul's deputy police chief. The council members were not wounded. The deputy chief was wounded, but not seriously. Witnesses said the car bomb was an orange and white taxi with three suicide bombers inside, the news release reported.
Mosul police and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps soldiers have secured the scene, and coalition forces are providing security and medical assistance. The military combat support hospital in Mosul is providing mass-casualty support, the release said. Media reports of a second car bomb explosion in the city are inaccurate, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported, but two contract employees were injured when several mortar rounds hit a military base camp in north Mosul about an hour after the attack on the convoy, officials said.
Military officials at Camp Fallujah in Iraq said a U.S. Marine was killed June 7 while conducting stability operations in Anbar province. The Marine was assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
