President Praises Tenet's Tenure

President Bush today praised CIA Director George Tenet for doing what he said was a "superb job on behalf of the American people," after accepting Tenet's letter of resignation June 2.

Tenet had served as the agency's leader since 1997.

During a short press White House briefing today, the president said that he had met with Tenet Wednesday night and had a "good visit with him."

"He told me was resigning for personal reasons," the president said. "I told him I'm sorry he's leaving."

The president said that Tenet will continue to serve as CIA director until mid-July, at which time the CIA's deputy director, John McLaughlin, will serve as the acting director. McLaughlin has been in that position since October 2000.

"George Tenet is the kind of public servant you like to work with. He's strong. He's resolute," the president said. "He has been a strong and able leader at the agency. He's been a strong leader in the war on terror. And I will miss him."

Tenet was sworn in as CIA director July 10, 1997.

In his position director of central intelligence, Tenet headed all foreign intelligence agencies of the United States and directed the CIA.

Before his nomination to head the agency, he served as deputy director.
