The young man frequently glanced toward the back of the room as he sat in the front- row chair that sported his name on a piece of plain white paper. This was no ordinary day for Johnathan D. Stone, nor was it a day his family was going to miss.
The copier duplicating equipment operator with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency at Fort Belvoir, Va., was one of 17 Department of Defense employees to be recognized as an outstanding employee with disabilities during the 23rd Annual DoD Disability Awards Ceremony and 16th Annual Disability Forum. The event was held Dec. 9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel here.
"It's very exciting," he said before the ceremony. "It's good to be here with my family."
His mother, Rae; sister, Linda; and wife, Brenda made the short journey from Annandale, Va., to see Stone receive his award from Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness David S. C. Chu.
"I think this is wonderful," said Rae. "We're really so proud of him. We always knew John had potential. He's gotten several awards since he's worked with the Department of Defense."
Stone began his federal career in 1992 as a clerk typist. He has had numerous jobs ranging from audiovisual assistant to duplicating equipment operator. His cognitive disabilities do not prevent him from acquiring new skills, such as operating bindery equipment. His primary responsibility is to assist with binding, putting completed jobs together.
In July, he received a "Can Do" award for his positive attitude and commitment to the workplace. Customer survey comments attest to his customer service skills and willingness to go the extra mile.
The native of Washington, D.C., graduated from Washington and Lee High School in 1980. He has been a member of his church chorus for more than seven years, and participated in church theatrical events. He enjoys swimming, hiking and spending time with his wife of six years.
