U.S. and coalition troops in Iraq continued the offensive against insurgents today, seizing an Iraqi leader accused of inciting unrest and financing anti-coalition activities.
Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade and Iraqi police captured Sheik Taha Kitar and three other suspects during a raid conducted in Haswah, according to a Central Command news release.
CENTCOM also reported a 101st Airborne Division soldier killed today during a mortar attack on the division's headquarters in Mosul.
The name and unit of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The sheik captured during the Haswah raid, according to CENTCOM, is accused of encouraging Iraqi students near Haswah and Iskandariyah to commit anti-coalition acts. Taha Kitar, the command added, is also suspected of being involved in financing operations for anti-coalition organizations in Iraq.
The sheik and others seized in the raid were taken into coalition custody for questioning.
During his surprise, in-person Thanksgiving Day address to U.S. troops in Baghdad, President Bush pledged no let up in finding and subduing remaining Saddam Hussein supporters in Iraq, vowing, "We will stay until the job is done."
