Guardsmen, reservists, and their families and employers will have the chance to ride on a float honoring reserve component service and employers' contributions to that service during the Tournament of Roses 2004 parade in Pasadena, Calif.
The theme for this year's parade, which precedes the Rose Bowl football game on New Years Day, is "Music, Music, Music." The National Military Family Association and National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve float will take that theme a step further, celebrating "America's Employers Orchestrating Freedom." The float will feature Uncle Sam as a conductor.
The float's riders will be selected based on the second annual "Heroes Among Us" essay contest, sponsored by the two organizations.
The essay, "Tell Us About Your Hero," should be 500 to 800 words and describe why the nominee is a hero and how his or her employer has been a part of the team to ensure the hero's success, said Tom Bullock from the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
The contest is open to family members age 15 and over of reserve component members who have been deployed outside the United States for 279 or more days since Jan. 2.
The deadline for submissions is Dec. 5. For more information or to submit an entry, visit the National Military Family Association Web site. [link no longer available]
