Improvised explosive devices have claimed the lives of two more American soldiers in Iraq, and U.S. soldiers en route to a bridge repair mission detained 15 people, seizing weapons and cash.
A soldier attached to the 1st Armored Division died in Baghdad, Iraq, today when an IED detonated during his ordnance disposal team's attempt to disarm it, U.S. Central Command reported in a news release. On Sept. 9, a 3rd Corps Support Command soldier was killed and one other was wounded, CENTCOM reported, in an IED attack on their military vehicle along a major supply route northeast of Baghdad.
The wounded soldier was taken to the 28th Combat Support Hospital for treatment. The soldiers' names are being withheld until their families are notified.
Meanwhile, the 101st Airborne Division at Mosul, Iraq, reported in a news release that soldiers assigned to the division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team confiscated weapons and cash Sept. 9.
The soldiers were en route to a bridge for a repair mission when they encountered a group of vehicles, according to the news release. They approached the vehicles, and several of the occupants tried to run away. The engineers detained the group of seven men and their two trucks, in which the soldiers found seven AK-47 assault rifles, $220,000 in U.S. cash, and 68.5 million rials, the Iranian unit of currency.
After turning the detainees over at the nearest facility, the 101st news release continued, the soldiers returned to the bridge, where they detained eight more people in two vehicles, confiscating two more AK-47s. Officials said the groups were believed to be traveling together.
