CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. - As was his usual custom, Chaplain Eric Ebb opened the ceremony with a Bible scripture.
"For the love of money is the root of all evil," he said, and a wave of laughter rippled across the small room filled with a group who had gathered for the signing of the agreement between Camp Atterbury and Crane Federal Credit Union.
"I'm just kidding," said Ebb.
Col. Todd Townsend, Camp Atterbury post commander, and Michael Burch, president of CFCU, signed an agreement July 22 for the purpose of providing full branch financial and ATM services at Camp Atterbury and ATM services at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center.
The first ATM is already operational at Muscatatuck. The remaining ATMs are scheduled to be stood up by October and the branch is scheduled to open in November.
The CFCU will be a full-service branch, with operations taking place during the week and open on one weekend day to accommodate inactive duty training and financial education and training. Additionally, the branch will have the ability to adjust hours when brigade-size elements arrive for training or processing.
"Crane Federal Credit Union will provide another incredible service and convenience to our Soldiers and civilians that work and train here," said Townsend.
Townsend said considering the 3,000 people who work at both installations and the thousands more who train here, the credit union could potentially have anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 members.
Maj. Daryl Kasper, the credit union liaison officer, said just about anybody who works or trains on either Camp Atterbury or Muscatatuck can become a member of Crane Federal Credit Union.
Kasper then explained that the credit union is the first financial institution selected and approved for establishing first time service on a Continental United States Department of Defense military installation in more than 13 years.
"Today is a big deal," he said.
The founder of the CFCU, Ajax Arvin, was also present for the ceremony.
"I'm back after 65 years!" he said during his opening remarks. Arvin was station very briefly at Camp Atterbury during World War II.
After the war, when Arvin was working at Crane, he said he became aware of a serious problem for installation workers: by the time they got off from work, the banks in the community were closed. Arvin, the CFCU's first member, created the credit union as way to alleviate that problem for Crane workers and 55 years later he can boast that the CFCU has more than 26,000 members.
The chief executive officer of the CFCU, Burch, said the main benefit of the branch will be convenient access to a wide variety of excellent financial products and services to those who work or are stationed at Camp Atterbury.
"Outside the 'financial' benefits, CFCU will have the privilege and honor of serving those who serve our great nation..." he said.
The CFCU was federally chartered in 1955. CFCU has been involved in multiple facets of supporting the mission at the Naval Support Activity Crane, of which Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center is the primary tenant.
