Six U.S. soldiers were wounded in two separate attacks in Iraq today, said Combined Joint Task Force 7 officials.

Three soldiers of the 1st Armored Division were wounded when an improvised explosive device struck their vehicle. They were part of a convoy traveling on Highway 8 six kilometers north of al Muddiyah a northern suburb of Baghdad. Two soldiers went for treatment to the 28th Combat Support Hospital and one returned to duty.

The second incident happened in Baghdad. Three Americans were wounded and an Iraqi interpreter is missing. The Americans were evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital. There was no information on their conditions available.

Just after midnight July 1, a building next to a mosque in the former regime stronghold of Fallujah exploded, said Army Spc. Nicole Thompson, a task force spokeswoman. "We don't know the exact cause of the explosion," she said. "People at the scene believe explosives hidden in the building went off for whatever reason. Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division are assisting Iraqis with the clean up at the site and for security."

Yesterday, a 4th Infantry Division soldier was wounded in a rocket-propelled grenade attack near Samarra. There is no information on his medical status.

Thompson said Operation Sidewinder, the 4th Infantry Division's sweep begun June 29 looking for Baath Party members and other remnants of the old regime, continues.

The 4th Infantry Division conducted 25 raids in support of Sidewinder that resulted in 25 detainees, according to a U.S. Central Command release. Six AK-47s, two machine guns, five rocket-propelled grenade launchers were among confiscated weapons, along with assorted ammunition and military equipment.
