An exhibit featuring photographs from the newly released book, "A Day in the Life of the United States Armed Forces," opened May 8 here at the Women's Memorial.

The book chronicles the actions of U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen for the 24 hours of Oct. 22, 2002, around the globe. It features photographs from all walks of daily service life, including recruits, military academy cadets, elite-unit members and troops at remote outposts. Ranks range from privates, to petty officers, to captains, to generals. The images will be on display at the memorial until July 8.

The photographs were taken by more than 125 respected military and civilian photographers around the globe. About 60 of them, including 12 Pulitzer Prize winners, attended the event and talked to the media and spectators about their work.

Defense officials at the exhibit's opening included Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, and Army Gen. Tommy Franks, head of U.S. Central Command.

The Women's Memorial honors women who have served in the nation's armed forces during all eras and in all services. It is located at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.
