South Carolina Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom announced on March 17 the rollout of a new campaign in support of U.S. military personnel serving overseas.

The campaign is being coordinated with the Pentagon's program known as "America Supports You."

"We want to raise awareness and build support for our troops," Eckstrom said. "Our kick-off will feature a phone card project among the 65 employees in my office. A telephone call to loved ones back home can be a tremendous boost to military personnel and their families. Our initial goal is to distribute 65 phone cards to troops in Iraq."

Eckstrom and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford were briefed on the "America Supports You" project during their visit this week to the Pentagon in support of South Carolina's military bases. Eckstrom co-chairs the governor's South Carolina Military Base Task Force.

"South Carolinians are known for their patriotism and have always been strongly supportive of the military," Eckstrom said. "This is one important way that everyone can get involved, not just in supporting our troops by boosting morale, but ultimately in making America and the world safer for future generations. It's important that we clearly show our strong support for the military at this critical point in the impending base realignment and closing process."

A news conference announcing the involvement of other South Carolina constitutional offices will take place this week, officials said. Eckstrom said he expects to enlist the participation of all state agencies.
