Close cooperation and the time-honored tradition of frank communication is central to the security of the United States and other freedom-loving nations, the prospective U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said here March 7.
In announcing the nomination of Michael Bolton, under secretary of state for arms control and international security, to the U.N. post, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice emphasized the country's commitment to working closely with the United Nations.
"The United States is committed to the success of the United Nations, and we view the U.N. as an important component of our diplomacy," she said.
Today, with "a challenging agenda" before it, Rice said the world body "must play a critical role as it strives to fulfill the dreams and hopes and aspirations of its original promise" to promote peace, human rights, social progress and freedom.
Bolton "is personally committed" to the U.N.'s mission and success, and "will be a strong voice for reform" as the U.N. adapts to meet current challenges, Rice said.
The ambassador nominee said his long record of government and diplomatic service "demonstrates clear support for effective multilateral diplomacy" and agreed that the United Nations offers its members "the opportunity to move our policies forward together with unity of purpose."
"The challenges of the 21st century requires all nations to work together to achieve meaningful results," said White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, referring to Bolton's nomination during a March 7 briefing. "We are committed to working closely with the United Nations on our common agenda. And the president believes it's important that the United Nations focuses on achieving results to make the world a safer place and to make the world a better place."
