Marine Killed in Action in Ramadi

A Marine assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), was killed April 14 by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq, military officials in Baghdad reported today.

Officials provided no further details.

In other news from Iraq, a fight broke out between two groups of detainees at a compound at the Camp Bucca theater internment facility today, leaving one detainee dead.

Officials said the fight was among the detainees in one compound and was not directed at U.S. forces.

The guards regained control of the compound and immediately began rendering medical treatment, including efforts to save the life of the detainee who ultimately died. Twelve other detainees were injured during the fight, officials said. All detainees at Camp Bucca have been accounted for, and the incident is under investigation.

Nearly 12,000 U.S. servicemembers who were deployed from the United States to Iraq on short notice or had their tours of duty extended in support of the Jan.30 Iraqi elections have all returned to their home bases, officials said. The affected servicemembers came from Hawaii, Texas, Okinawa, Germany and North Carolina. The length of their extensions varied from unit to unit, depending on the mission assigned.

"The troops that were extended in place and deployed from the U.S. for this mission did a great job," said Army Gen. George Casey, commander of Multinational Force Iraq. "They really made a difference in our ability to assist the Iraqi security forces in preparing for and conducting the elections."

With their departure and the nearing completion of the recent rotation, U.S. troop numbers have stabilized in Iraq at about 138,000. About 22,000 troops from other coalition countries also are serving in Iraq, officials said.
