Officials at U.S. European Command have released more details surrounding the crash overnight of a U.S. Air Force aircraft in Albania.

In a news release, the command confirmed that nine U.S. servicemembers were aboard, but said their status still is unknown.

The aircraft was an MC-130H Combat Talon assigned to the 352nd Special Operations Group, based at Royal Air Force base Mildenhall, England. It crashed in a remote, mountainous area about 65 miles north of the Albanian capital of Tirana. The release said the aircraft was on a night training mission conducting joint combined exchange training with the Albanian military, and that an investigation into the cause of the crash has been initiated.

The Combat Talon provides infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces and equipment in hostile or denied territory. Secondary missions include psychological operations and helicopter air refueling.
