U.S. soldiers May 27 captured and detained a terrorist suspect apparently waiting to detonate an improvised explosive device near the al-Shahaba Mosque in Jarf as Sakhr, Iraq, officials said.
The terrorist suspect had been detained by Iraqi National Guard forces in February for reportedly planting IEDs in the same area.
The soldiers, from the 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment, 155th Brigade Combat Team, attached to 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), were tipped off by an informant who noticed a man acting in a suspicious manner. The soldiers soon observed the man squatting on the side of the road. He fled on foot and was wounded when the soldiers fired at him, officials said. The terrorist suspect reportedly was treated for his wounds and is in stable condition.
Officials described the IED as a 105 mm artillery round with protruding wires. The IED was situated in a white box and had a detonation cord, circuit board, four AA batteries, washing-machine timer, and blasting caps. The soldiers said the device had been placed in the middle of a main street, roughly 500 meters from the mosque. They also reported finding a garage-door opener in the vicinity of the terrorist suspect's initial position.
An explosive ordnance disposal team from Forward Operating Base Iskandariyah detonated explosive material they saw protruding from a nearby crater. The explosion revealed two 152 mm artillery rounds buried in the crater, officials said.
Elsewhere in Iraq, a soldier assigned to the 155th Brigade Combat Team, attached to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, died May 26 from wounds sustained near Diyara, when an IED detonated near his vehicle.
A Marine assigned to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) also was killed May 26 by a rocket-propelled grenade explosion during Operation New Market, a combat operation in Hadithah.
The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
