Army World Class Athlete Program Plans Move

The Army will centralize World Class Athlete Program operations at Fort Carson, Colo., in 1997.

Currently, a number of Army installations run parts of the program. There are 19 separate sports that include boxing, wrestling, taekwando, marksmanship, track and field, cycling, modern pentathlon, team handball, swimming, bobsled and biathlon. Officials said consolidating the sports will cut operating costs and help supervisors control training.

Army world-class athletes will also be able to use the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the U.S. Air Force World Class Athlete Program in Colorado Springs.

Not all disciplines will move. Army officials said soldiers in the Army biathlon program, currently training for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, will continue training with the U.S. National Team at Colchester, Vt. The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit will remain at Fort Benning, Ga. Soldiers in the modern pentathlon program will continue to train with the U.S. National Team at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
