DoD is expanding eligibility for the new Armed Forces Service Medal to service members assigned throughout Italy.
The change now authorizes all Italy-based troops supporting operations Provide Promise, Joint Endeavor, Able Sentry, Deny Flight, Maritime Monitor and Sharp Guard to receive the award. Previously, the medal was limited to troops at Aviano Air Base and Brindisi Air Station.
President Clinton authorized the Armed Forces Service Medal last spring, awarding it to service members participating in specified U.S. operations. Those eligible must be members of U.S. military units and face no foreign armed opposition or imminent threat of hostile action.
To further qualify, troops must be members of a deployed unit at least one day while their unit is in the designated area. Others may meet eligibility by meeting one or both of the following requirements:
Individuals no longer assigned in eligible areas who believe they deserve the award should bring proof of assignment (official orders, travel vouchers, etc.) to their servicing military personnel office.
Service members may receive only one medal for their special service. Bronze service stars will indicate second and subsequent awards. The new medal is available through commercial sources. Individuals should contact their local base exchange. Units will receive word once the medal is available through the defense supply system.
