Two Defense Department civilians and a family member were among the 230 people killed in the Trans World Airlines Flight 800 explosion July 17 off Long Island, N.Y.
Among the passerngers were Leonard and Eleanor Johnson of Springfield, Va., and Charles Beatty of Spotsylvania County, Va.
Leonard Johnson, 56, a 30-year Army civilian, worked with the Mobility Technical Command at Fort Belvoir, Va. Originally from Seattle, he was a mechanical engineer and a specialist in aircraft fueling, fuel systems and fuel additives.
The Johnsons were to vacation in Paris prior to his attending a NATO logistics conference in Brussels, Belgium. Johnson was to represent the Army in a U.S. delegation working to standardize fuel equipment for NATO forces.
Beatty, 50, served more than 26 years as a Navy civilian and was a senior systems engineer with the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren, Va. Base officials said Beatty was heading to Italy, where he was to assist in improving the information systems aboard USS LaSalle. LaSalle is supporting NATO operations for Operation Joint Endeavor.
The Johnsons are survived by their son, Eric, of Springfield, Va., and daughter, Christina, a student at Elon (N.C.) College. Beatty is survived by his widow, Suzanne, and children, Michael and Mary.
