Army Gen. John M. Shalikashvili plans to retire in September after completing his fourth year as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Defense Secretary William S. Cohen announced the general's retirement at a press conference Jan. 31.

"I will miss him, the troops surely are going to miss him, and the nation is going to miss him," Cohen said. "He is a true leader and one I expect to consult very closely with during the remaining eight months."

Shalikashvili became the 13th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in October 1993. He is the principal military adviser to the president, secretary of defense and the National Security Council. Prior to being named chairman, Shalikashvili served as supreme allied commander, Europe, and commander in chief, U.S. European Command.
