A veteran physician and former deputy assistant secretary of defense may soon return to the Pentagon as DoD's senior health official.
President Clinton announced Feb. 24, the nomination of Dr. Sue Bailey to become assistant secretary of defense for health affairs. She previously served as deputy secretary in health affairs from July 1994 to June 1995.
Bailey will fill a position vacated by Dr. Stephen Joseph. Since Joseph's departure, Dr. Edward Martin has served as acting assistant secretary.
"I am very pleased with the president's nomination of [Bailey] for the position of assistant secretary," Martin said. "She brings a wealth of experience from clinical to academia to health care management. Dr. Bailey's leadership will guide military medicine successfully into the next century." A rear admiral in the Public Health Service, Martin is scheduled to retire in March.
The assistant secretary of defense for health affairs has a two-fold mission: military readiness and peacetime health care. Military health care providers deliver medical and preventive health services and support to the armed forces during military operations. In peacetime, they provide continuous medical and preventive services and support to service members, their families and survivors, retired members and their families and all others entitled to DoD health care.
