"The government is us; we are the government, you and I."
President Theodore Roosevelt's words will be celebrated at military installations and U.S. government offices around the world beginning May 3, the opening of Public Service Recognition Week.
The annual event recognizes the contributions of everyone who has chosen a career in public service -- including the military and Department of Defense civilian work force.
"Public Service Recognition Week provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase the myriad missions we perform in war fighting, peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts," said David O. Cooke, DoD's director of administration and management and chairman of the event. "We have a right to be proud of our service to the nation."
A highlight of the week's celebration in Washington, D.C., will be a display of programs, equipment and service members on the National Mall. The display will feature the contributions of a wide range of DoD agencies and military units. In addition, visitors will get the opportunity to see military helicopters, weapon systems and other hardware.
The display, located near the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, will open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. May 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 8 and 9.
