Commissaries at Fort Myer, Va., Whiting Field, Fla., RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, and Bamberg, Germany, walked off with top honors in this year's commissary competition.

The winners were named during recent ceremonies at the American Logistics Association's 49th Annual Convention in New Orleans recently.

Fort Myer received the Bill Nichols Award for the best large U.S. commissary, while Whiting Field's commissary took the Richard M. Paget Award for the Best Small Commissary in the United States.

Overseas, the RAF Lakenheath commissary took home the Dan Daniel Award for the Best Large Overseas Commissary, while the Bamberg commissary claimed the L. Mendel Rivers Award for the Best Small Overseas Commissary.

The awards are named in memory of statesmen who protected the commissary benefit and championed quality of life issues for the military and their families. Winners received large, engraved silver bowl trophies, and finalists received smaller, engraved trophies at the ceremony.

Average monthly sales and geographic location determine competition categories. Large U.S. commissaries have average monthly sales exceeding $1.5 million, and small commissaries have monthly sales of less than $1.5 million. Large overseas commissaries have average monthly sales of $750,000 or more, and small commissaries average less than $750,000.
