DoD recently revised the remaining 1996 jet and parachute demonstration team schedules. The new schedules, released June 6, reflect performance changes for the Navy's Blue Angels, the Air Force's Thunderbirds and the Army's Golden Knights.
Defense officials said they altered the schedule for numerous reasons. A leadership change with the Blue Angels canceled three performances in June. Show cancellations, loss of air show sponsorship and unsatisfactory demonstration sites were other factors officials cited in rearranging the 1996 schedule.
DoD receives more than 200 requests annually for the three demonstration teams. Officials said they present shows based on the season length, travel and training requirements, safety and operational considerations, and seasonal weather conditions.
Officials said the three teams perform to support DoD objectives and the interests of the armed forces. Performances assist military recruiting and retention goals, enhance morale among uniformed men and women, and demonstrate the professional skills and capabilities of the U.S. armed forces to the American public and U.S. allies.
