A joint Army-Air Force quartet recently defeated teams from 14 other countries in Warsaw, Poland, to win America's first CISM modern pentathlon championship in 15 years.
Army Capt. Jim Gregory paced the squad by collecting 5,379 points in the five events and winning the individual silver medal. His point and medal finish is the best of any American in 15 years. Modern pentathlon consists of running, swimming, shooting, fencing and horsemanship.
The United States captured team gold when Gregory's score was added to those of teammates Army Spcs. Brett Weatherbie and Chad Senior, 8th and 15th finishers overall, respectively. Air Force Capt. Dirk Bouma's score didn't figure in the best-of-three tally.
The team silver in the late August competition, sponsored by the International Military Sports Council, went to the Czech Republic and bronze went to Italy. Other teams represented Poland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Austria, Brazil, Lithuania and Netherlands. The 121- nation council, the International Military Sports Council, is better known by its initials, CISM, which come from its French name.
