U.S. Women's Volleyball Team Loses Opening Match

The U.S. armed forces women's volleyball team rallied back from a 2-0 game deficit but came up short against the Netherlands 3-1 in its opening round match Aug. 10 at the 2nd Military World Games here.

Losing the first two games 16-25 and 21-25, the women battled back to take the third game 25-21 before losing the final game 25-21.

Mustelli Finishes 18th in Individual Fencing

ZAGREB, Croatia - With eight victories, Air Force Capt. Nicole L. Mustelli ranked as the highest scoring member of the U.S. fencing team. She finished 18th out of the 24 fencers in the individual fencing competition at the 2nd Military World Games.

Air Force Capt. Tanya A. Horwitz and Air Force Reserve Lt. Zoe C. Hawes tied with three victories to finish in 20th place.

"The thing I like best about my sport is it is a battle of wills," said Mustelli, who learned to use a foil in high school. She defeated fencers from China, Russia, Belarus and Germany.

Graves Throws Weight Around for Seventh in World Games Judo

ZAGREB, Croatia -- Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Charles Graves III from Okinawa, Japan, placed seventh Aug. 10 in the 81 kilogram weight division at the 2nd Military World Games here.

Graves won his first two matches in less than a minute by slamming Bosko Rozja of Croatia and Ruslan Zadbornit of Ukraine to the mat with perfect throws. He advanced to the quarterfinals, but was eliminated by two straight losses.
