Department of Defense Education Activity school lunch prices for the 1998-1999 school year will hold at $1.95 for elementary graders and $2.10 for all others.
The Army and Air Force Exchange Service runs the school lunch program on overseas Army and Air Force bases. It froze prices at last year's levels because of a strong dollar in world markets, lower operating costs and adequate funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the education activity, according to Capt. Cecilia Henson, exchange service staff dietitian. The lunch price for teachers and nonstudents remains $3.20.
The USDA requires two meal plans based on age-related calorie and nutrient requirements. One plan is for grades 1-6 and the other, grades 7-16.
Students of qualifying families receive free and reduced-cost meals, Henson said. Changes in USDA rules mean more military families can participate this year, she said. Discounted lunches cost 40 cents.
The exchange service last year prepared more than 26,000 lunches every school day worldwide.
