AAFES, Cosco Sound Crib Defect Alert
DALLAS -- More than 390,000 Cosco baby cribs made since January 1995, some possibly sold by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, may be misassembled with a deadly defect.
The defective Cosco full-size metal baby cribs were assembled with the mattress platform being used as a side rail. The side rail and mattress platform are the same size and sometimes inadvertently switched. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards limit the space between side rail slats to no more than 2 3/8 inches, but if misassembled the mattress platform leaves about five inches between slats. Infants' heads could become trapped between rails, resulting in serious injury or death.
AAFES officials said Cosco has received more than 47 reports of misassembled cribs including 27 babies becoming trapped, resulting in one death.
Cosco cribs ride on wheels and consist of tubular metal in a variety of colors. The cribs have date codes of 0195 or higher printed on a sticker located on the bottom of the end panel. Model numbers and colors sold by the exchange service are 10T06 Multiple Colors, 10T14White, 10T94White.
Consumers should contact Cosco for instructions on properly reassembling defective cribs or to arrange an in-home repair.
Customers in the United States should call Cosco toll-free at (800) 221-6736. Customers overseas should contact Cosco at the address listed below.
