Department of Defense Education Activity students' 2002 SAT I participation rate jumped 4 percent to a new high of 68 percent, DoDEA officials announced Sept. 3.
DoDEA director Joseph Tafoya said DoDEA's SAT I participation rate in domestic and overseas schools increased significantly, while the average math score remained at 2001's level of 497 and the average verbal score fell by only one point to 504. He noted average math and verbal test scores normally tend to fall as participation rates climb.
Participation rates are based on the number of students taking the SAT divided by the school system's total 12th grade enrollment. DoDEA's rates were 64 percent in 2001 and 59 percent in 2000, Tafoya said.
The overseas school students' participation rate climbed to 74 percent in 2002, up from 70 percent in 2001. In just one year, he said, the stateside students' participation rate climbed 10 percentage points to a new high of 49 percent in 2002.
Six DoDEA students earned a perfect score of 800 on the verbal section while four earned the top score of 800 in mathematics.

The SAT I is a primarily multiple-choice test that measures verbal and math abilities related to success in college. The three-hour SAT supplements high school records and other information in assessing a student's readiness for college work. SAT scores are required by about 90 percent of four-year colleges and universities that have admission requirements, DoDEA officials said. Another test, the SAT II series, measures knowledge about particular academic subjects, such as biology or American history.
