The deadline is Aug. 30 for the 17,000 chosen service members to return surveys on what they paid overseas for housing utilities and maintenance.

The Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee administers the Overseas Housing Allowance program. It sent eight-page surveys in April to collect data on utility and recurring maintenance costs from 17,000 military members identified as having lived in private housing at over 90 different overseas locations for six months or more during 2001.

Committee officials said their objective is to compute accurate expenses to determine if the utilities and maintenance portion of the Overseas Housing Allowance needs adjustment. The survey is voluntary and confidential, they said, and results will be reported in the fall.

Members may be unaware they were selected if they've moved recently. The officials encourage persons to call or e-mail their country point of contact to determine whether should have received a survey. A list of these contacts is at www.dtic.mil/perdiem/utility-survey.pdf. [link no longer available]
