BAGHDAD -- Army Lt. Gen. Michael D. Barbero NATO Training Mission-Iraq commander kicked off the Independence Day celebration with a ceremony at the Babylon Conference Center at FOB Union III, July 4.
During his remarks, Barbero said that this day "should forever stand out with special significance."
"Like many other Americans throughout our history, today we are engaged in a mission to secure freedom for others," he said. "And you join a long line of brave and dedicated warriors who have put Iraq on the path to its freedom - liberating the people of Iraq and allowing them to chart their own course of history."
Capt. Eric Goldie, Advising and Traning deputy general, resource manager, said the best part of the day was going to the Independence Day ceremony.
"When they played 'America the Beautiful,' sung by Ray Charles, and I saw 'Old Glory' waving proudly in different settings I got choked up with American pride," he said.
Throughout the Independence Day weekend, FOB Union III members took time out of their mission-filled days to participate in events such as basketball and volleyball tournaments, and enjoying a barbecue at the dining facility.
