Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is slated to depart Washington this afternoon for a six-day trip to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Brussels.

The secretary will meet with senior officials in those countries to discuss the war on terrorism, according to Pentagon spokeswoman Torie Clarke. He will also attend the semi-annual ministerial at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Clarke said the secretary believes it important to "reaffirm what it is we're trying to accomplish in the war on terrorism" and "how important it is to have these evolving and changing coalitions that we have." In his talks with the foreign leaders, Rumsfeld plans to underscore the importance of "the incredibly positive contributions of lots of different people from lots of different nations," she added.

The secretary is scheduled to return to Washington Dec. 19.
