More than 400 people fired off e-mail and faxes with questions for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld at his Aug. 9 town hall meeting in the Pentagon.

Rumsfeld took questions from the field and his live audience for some 45 minutes. Topics ranged from family housing to career management, force transformation and U.S. policy in Asia.

The secretary had promised at the start that all questions would be answered. Gratified by the audience response, Rumsfeld issued a brief public statement before his Aug. 11-13 trip to Moscow:

"Thanks for taking the time to send in your town hall questions. I wish I'd had time to get to them all at the podium. We're working on answers for them now. We hope to have all the questions answered within a few days."

Plans call for Rumsfeld's responses to unanswered town hall questions to appear on the DoD Web site, www.defenselink.mil. A transcript of the meeting is at www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/2001/t08092001_t809town.html.
