Defense Secretary William S. Cohen thanked Bahrain’s leaders and people today for their steadfast assistance in helping to keep the Mideast a peaceful and stable region.

Cohen called the U.S.-Bahrain security partnership “one of the strongest relationships we have anywhere,” during a Nov. 16 press conference at International Airport, here.

“I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the Emir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister for the strong support Bahrain has provided the United States during the past 50 years,” Cohen said. “Our relationship can be summarized by the words commitment, containment and continuity.”

There is shared commitment between the United States and Bahrain to preserve peace in the Persian Gulf region, Cohen said. Both countries, he added, are also dedicated in the containment of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, to prevent him from threatening his neighbors and rebuilding his armies and stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.

Despite the uncertainty created by the disputed U.S. presidential election, Cohen noted that the Bahrain-U.S. relationship would continue, regardless of which candidate is elected.

“We again thank the Bahrani people and their government for their commitment to this relationship with the United States,” he said. “Our policy of commitment and continuity and containment is one that will will continue to follow for the indefinite future.”
