Turkish wrestlers captured 13 individual medals and both overall team titles to sweep the 2000 CISM World Military Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Championships here Oct. 28 and 29.
Teams from 10 nations took part in the competitions, sponsored by the Conseil International du Sport Militaire -- the International Military Sports Council. The teams ranged in size from the one-man Brazilian squad to the eight-man rosters fielded by Turkey, China and the United States.
Six U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers took home individual medals to earn second place in the team event, nine points behind the Turks. Five Americans earned Freestyle medals to cop second from the Chinese on points and pins and trailed the Turks by just four points.
In the finals of the Greco-Roman 58-kilogram weight class Sgt. Duaine Martin of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., executed a gut wrench on Cerpiz Papgan of Turkey and scored eight consecutive points in the first period. He only needed two points in the second to win by technical fall.
"Between rounds coach told me not to let down and stay aggressive. I knew that if I went out and stayed aggressive I would win," Martin said. He scored three points and pinned Papgan for gold.
For another U.S. wrestler, Spc. Mike VanArsdale, the freestyle tournament was the end of a wrestling era. Now 35, Arsdale won the 97-kilogram title and the best all around freestyle wrestler award and then walked off the mat for the last time.
"I've got a family now. I've got a wife and two kids," VanArsdale said. "I need to take care of them instead of running around everywhere wrestling." He's hoping one day to help coach the Army and U.S. wrestling teams.
This year's CISM freestyle wrestling championship proved to be one of the more exciting to date. Of the many pairings, perhaps none proved more interesting than the Oct. 27 freestyle final between Germany's Arawat Sabejew, bronze medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and Turkey's Aydin Polatci. The match was tied 2-2 until the final seconds, when Polatci scored a takedown and an upset.
Dominik Zeh of Germany, five-time German junior champ fought his way to gold in the 69-kilogram freestyle event and called it his most meaningful and difficult to date. He's now setting his goals higher and wants a stab at the German Open Championship and the Germany's 2004 Olympic team.
