KABUL, Afghanistan – Joint Afghan-international security forces conducted operations in Helmand, Kapisa and Khost provinces last night.

An Afghan-international security force detained two suspected insurgents in Helmand province last night while pursuing a Taliban commander with ties to an insurgent network operating in southern Arghandab district of Kandahar province.

The Afghan-led combined security force detained the suspected insurgents while searching a compound west of the village of Chahar Bagh in Nad, Ali District. Five pounds of heroin was also found. Women and children were protected by the combined security force.

In a separate operation, Afghan and international forces detained several suspected insurgents in Kapisa province last night while pursuing a Taliban commander directly linked to an ambush in September 2008 which wounded three coalition forces.

A security force went to a compound in the village of Adiza‟i in the Tagab District to search the area. Afghan soldiers used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the compound and then cleared the buildings.

Once the compound was secure, the combined security force detained the suspected insurgents for further questioning. No shots were fired and women and children were protected by the security force.

Afghan and coalition forces detained two suspected insurgents in Khost province last night while pursuing a Haqqani network commander responsible for planning and facilitating attacks against coalition forces.

The commander is also the head mullah of a Haqqani madrassa in the village of Laken, which he uses to plan attacks and recruit Haqqani operatives and suicide bombers.

A security force went to the madrassa in Matun district and searched the area. After an Afghan-only force searched the madrassa and secured the scene, they detained the suspected insurgents for further questioning. The security force found 14 grenades and a number of guns at the madrassa.

No shots were fired and women and children in the area were protected by the security force
In an update to the July 7 IJC Operational Update, Afghan and ISAF officials have confirmed that a combined Afghan-international security force captured a Taliban commander during an operation in Khugyani District, Nangarhar province July 7.

The commander is linked to the overall Taliban emir of Khugyani District and associated with the recent influx of Lashkar-e Tayyiba operatives into the province. LeT is the Pakistani-based terrorist organization responsible for the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

“Capturing this commander degrades the Taliban‟s operational and facilitation capabilities and helps us eliminate the indiscriminate tactics used by insurgents who cause the vast majority of civilian casualties in Afghanistan,” said Col. William Maxwell, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations director.
