The Silver Star Families of America organization works to honor sacrifices made by servicemembers wounded in all wars, past and present.

“The group works tirelessly to see the wounded honored with Silver Star banners,” said Janie Orman, the group’s vice president.

The group also has worked to have mayors and governors proclaim May 1 Silver Star Day, she said. The day, which was observed by 43 states and 14 cities this year, is set aside as a special observance to honor servicemembers.

In addition, the group is working to see its Silver Star Banner become an official service banner, like Blue Star and Gold Star banners, which honor families that have a servicemember deployed or who have had a family member killed in military service, respectively.

Silver Star Families of America acts as an advocate for the wounded and to educate the public on issues pertaining wounded servicemembers, Orman said.

Silver Star Families of America is a member of America Supports You, a Defense Department program connecting citizens and corporations with military personnel and their families serving at home and abroad.

This membership has provided the group with great networking opportunities, Orman said. The group’s presence on the America Supports You Web site has allowed many who needed the group’s services to contact Silver Star Families of America, she added.

“(Because of this,) America Supports You has also helped the Silver Star Families of America to become a trusted nonprofit that is known for accomplishing its goals, and that is to present Silver Star banners at no cost to the recipient,” Orman said. “(The group) has become an organization that services our wounded heroes in any and every way they can.”
