CAMP NATHAN SMITH, Afghanistan – The 504th Military Police Battalion, deployed out of Fort Lewis, Washington, assumed command of the mentoring and partnership mission from the 97th MP Battalion in Kandahar City, July 6 at Camp Nathan Smith.
During the ceremony, Brig. Gen. John Vance, Commander of Task Force Kandahar, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the members of the 97th MP BN for a job well done, and alluded to the duty that lay ahead for the 504th MP's, ensuring that he had every confidence that they were up to the task of fulfilling, and indeed exceeding the accomplishments of their predecessors.
The 504th is now responsible for providing a partnership and mentoring atmosphere with the local Afghan National Police force in Kandahar City, as well as assisting in providing security for the districts in Kandahar City.
Today, the 504th MP BN consists of a Headquarters Detachment, the 51st MP Detachment, and the 54th, 66th, 170th, and 571st MP Companies.
When not deployed, the Soldiers of this battle-tested organization prepare for war and contingency operations while simultaneously providing force protection and community assistance to the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., community.
The 97th redeploys back to Fort Riley, Kan., having conducted more than 650 combined patrols, resulting in the apprehension of over 70 insurgents, 25 found improvised explosive devices, and 50 unexploded ordnances throughout Kandahar City.
