The Defense Department today celebrated another record-breaking year of fundraising by presenting a check for $15.8 million to the National Capital Area Combined Federal Campaign.
The check represents the department’s total contribution to the annual fundraising campaign and is $200,000 more than the 2006 total.
At a Pentagon ceremony recognizing DoD’s contributions, Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England thanked employees for their generosity and hard work on the 2007 campaign. DoD led CFC fundraising in the national capital area, with 55 percent of employees participating and an average gift of $365, up $23 from 2006.
“For all organizations and countries, generosity is a hallmark of great nations and great people,” England said, noting that the department sets the standard for fundraising not only for the national capital area, but for the nation.
Within DoD, 14 components earned the Summit Award, which recognizes agencies that saw a 3 percent increase in contributions from the previous year. Also, 21 of 24 campaigns earned unit awards for their efforts, and the department had 3,513 “eagles,” or people who contributed more than 1 percent of their salary.
Michael Donley, director of administration and management for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, noted that DoD’s contributions account for 27 percent of the contributions by government agencies in the national capital area and “enabled the Department of Defense to maintain its distinction as the single largest charitable fundraising organization in the world.”
The Combined Federal Campaign is a nationally authorized workplace-giving drive in which federal employees are given the opportunity to contribute to hundreds of different charitable organizations through payroll deduction or one-time payment.
