FORWARD OPERATING BASE FARAH, Afghanistan - A soldier in the Afghanistan National Army was brought to Forward Operating Base Farah to receive treatment for gunshot wounds after a small arms fire-fight occurred in Shewan, Afghanistan, July 1.
Service members assigned to Charlie Troop, 4th Squadron 73rd Regiment and ANA soldiers were conducting a combined dismounted patrol when they were engaged by insurgents in a fire-fight. The ANA solider was medically evacuated from the scene and received treatment from the Forward Surgical Team and medical professionals assigned to the Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah.
“The patient suffered from a gunshot wound to the left leg and left arm. The patient’s left clavicle and humorous were shattered,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Ayers of Jacksonville, Fla., general surgeon for the FST.
Ayers placed a chest tube in the patient when injuries sustained caused Pneumothorax. The condition is a collection of air or gas between pleural cavity of the chest between the lung and the chest wall. A chest tube is placed in order to release trapped air from around the lung so it can expand.
U.S. Navy Lt. Gareth Evans of San Diego, Physician Assistant assigned to PRT Farah, administered chest compressions when the patient’s heart beat dropped and began to decompensate. His actions stabilized the patient’s vital signs.
“As medical providers we are helping to stabilize and treat coalition forces to keep manpower as high as possible to engage the enemy, and provide security to local Afghans,” said Evans.
The patient is being transferred to Camp Seyers in Herat, Afghanistan for further care.
Medical treatment at FOB Farah continues to be a vital focal point between battlefield treatment and advanced medical procedures. Many times battlefield treatment will not be sustainable through transportation to Herat. The medics at FOB Farah enhance the treatments received in the field, allowing them to be successfully transported for further advanced treatment.
