    USS WASP, AT SEA

USS WASP, At Sea– After a hard day of work aboard the multi-purpose Amphibious Assault Ship USS Wasp Sailors often seek a place to unwind. Wasp’s Library Multi-Media Resource Center is one of many places onboard that offers crew members an opportunity to relax.

Managed by Wasp’s Chaplain Department and staffed by volunteer crew members, LMRC offers the crew access to computers with internet and role playing games, board games and an array of donated movies and books supplied by Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

LMRC is also a popular venue for the crew to conduct meetings and study groups. Wasp Command Chaplain Cmdr. Dean L. Hoelz said the facility provides Sailors with more than an entertainment value; LMRC helps Sailors by offering work-related study and training material.

“There are many different types of programs installed on our stand-alone computers that allow our Sailors to increase their professional knowledge and advance their shipboard required qualifications,” Hoelz said.

To afford all crew members access to somewhat limited supplies, LMRC Supervisor Seaman Jimmy Lee Deskins, is urging Sailors who check out material to treat them with “kids gloves.”

“All we ask is that if you borrow a movie, or any of our reference materials, that you treat them with care and return them once you are finished so that the rest of the crew can use them as well,” he said.

Deskins said he believes the crew greatly appreciates the available resources in LMRC as evidenced by the more than 300 Sailors who visit on a daily basis.

On Sundays, Deskins said, “it seems like the whole crew is in and out of here throughout the day.”

Wasp Sailors like Seaman William Pollard, a confessed frequent visitor to the LMRC, said he greatly appreciates everything the facility has to offer.

“The LMRC is kind of like a big break room for me; I can go there and do anything; read a book, check my e-mail and surf the Internet,” he said. “It’s a great place to go if you want to get away from all the daily hassles of work and just rest up a bit.”
