Partnered Afghan and coalition forces continued to target insurgents throughout Afghanistan in recent operations, military officials reported.
Acting on intelligence reports yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained 11 suspected insurgents in Helmand province’s Nad-e Ali district.
The initial target of the operation was a senior Taliban commander responsible for facilitating deployment of roadside bombs and having overall command of nearly 70 enemy fighters.
In another intelligence-driven operation in Helmand yesterday, an Afghan and coalition security force detained two insurgents at a compound in the Sangin district that is linked to two key Taliban commanders prominent in the roadside-bomb facilitation network.
One of the commanders controls a central clearing house for incoming bomb components, distributing them throughout the area.
An armed man challenged the combined force at the targeted compound. Members of the force told him in both Pashtun and Dari to drop his weapon. When he ignored the orders and advanced toward the combined force, he was fatally shot. Two men were detained for possession of weapons and more than 20 pounds of wet opium.
Afghan and coalition forces detained two suspected insurgents in Paktia province yesterday while in pursuit of a Taliban facilitator for weapons and bomb components who also coordinated attacks.
Acting on intelligence tips, Afghan and coalition forces targeted a compound in the Gardez district to search for the facilitator and arrested the two suspected insurgents. The security force did not fire their weapons, and they protected women and children throughout the search.
In Kunduz province, Afghan and coalition forces detained three suspected insurgents yesterday while in pursuit of a commander in the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist organization operating in the Chahar Darah district.
The commander is well integrated with Taliban senior leadership in Kunduz and maintains contact with Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leadership in Pakistan, officials said. The security force did not fire their weapons, and they protected women and children throughout the search.
In Kandahar province, Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban weapons facilitator and an associate yesterday. Acting on intelligence tips, Afghan and coalition forces went to a compound outside Kandahar City in Daman district to search for the facilitator. The ground security force did not fire their weapons, and they protected women and children throughout the search.
In Uruzgan province Sept. 7, an insurgent commander was detained thanks to a group of concerned Afghan civilians that included government officials who turned him over to a combined Afghan and coalition security force.
The Afghan civilians said the insurgent commander planned, directed and executed several attacks in the area and that he routinely intimidated and threatened many people who work for or with coalition forces.
Afghan officials determined the insurgent was wanted for supplying roadside bombs, directing suicide bombers and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Meanwhile, an Afghan father was killed and his son was injured in device roadside-bomb blast in Kandahar’s Arghandab district yesterday.
The man reportedly was killed when he stepped on the bomb. An Afghan civilian brought the wounded child to a nearby coalition facility, where he received initial treatment. The child later was evacuated to Kandahar Airfield for further care.
