BAGHDAD – It was a short reprieve from an otherwise busy schedule at Contingency Operating Station Hammer.

Soldiers of Company B, 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, seemed glad for the change of pace. With the only shade being provided by a tarp overhead, they braved the hot Iraqi sun, June 4, to do something few expect during a deployment: play golf.

The idea began with the 210th BSB chaplain, Capt. Bob Davis. Davis said he loves to play golf with his kids, and that he knows of other deployed Soldiers who also play golf.

“I know we’ve got a lot of guys and gals out here that really enjoy it, and obviously it’s one of the things that is next to impossible to do because nobody brings their golf clubs, and there are no places to be able to hit,” he said.

Davis decided to plan a complete event for each company in the battalion, which included a barbeque and a small putting range and driving range set up so Soldiers could try their hand at golf. With the help of a generous donation of clubs and equipment, all the pieces were in place for the June 4, golf tourney.

He said events like these add a unique twist to an otherwise routine schedule and can make a big difference in a Soldier’s day.

“Soldiers have an opportunity to unwind a little bit, and in the process [they] get to develop some relationships,” he said. “It’s a way to relieve some stress in a very positive way. I’ve gotten a lot of great responses, and it’s nice to see smiles on Soldiers’ faces.”

Company B first sergeant, 1st Sgt. Tyrone Francis, said even during a deployment, it’s important to give Soldiers events like this for which to look forward to keep up unit morale.

“The Soldiers can practice their golf swing, make a little fun of themselves and enjoy themselves,” he said. “It’s important that the chain of command let Soldiers know that we appreciate what they do, and they get a little bit of time to just relax and enjoy themselves.”
