Combined forces have completed a three-day operation to counter a recent spike in violence along the Pakistan border in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province.

Ground troops and coalition air weapons teams killed numerous enemy fighters, including several snipers, and found multiple weapons caches throughout the operation, officials said.

Forces seized 5,000 rounds of assault-rifle and sniper ammunition, 200 pounds of ammonium nitrate -- a banned fertilizer used in explosives -- as well as 50 rocket-propelled grenades, 12 rocket-propelled grenade boosters, seven bolt-action rifles, a land mine, an anti-tank mine and assorted bomb-making materials.

In various other operations yesterday throughout Afghanistan, security forces found 63 mortar rounds, two anti-tank projectiles and two assault rifles.
