GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba -- The Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Wally Schirra unloaded 160 pallets of dry foods at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba June 9 as part of the Navy’s Project Handclasp Foundation, Inc.

High Speed Vessel Swift is scheduled to retrieve the stores in September and deliver them to a country in need.

“The stores will most likely be delivered to Haiti,” said Logistics Specialist 1st Class Randall Dinogan, the Customs Agriculture Inspector for Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Detachment Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “These are going to non-government organizations like Red Cross and religious organizations.”

The stores will then be distributed to those still affected by the earthquake that struck near the Haitain capital Jan. 12.

“As always, Guantanamo is a sort of hub for this region,” said Dinogan. “We’re always here to provide necessary manpower to ensure all operations in this theater are completed in a timely manner.”

Currently, there are 252 pallets in storage at base warehouses.

“During Operation Unified Response, we were part of the logistics reponse team,” said Dinogan. “We made sure everything got where it needed to be, and we continue to do that today.”

Project Handclasp Foundation, Inc. is a Navy program that coordinates transportation and delivery of humanitarian, educational and goodwill material donated to the foundation by corporations, charitable and public service organizations and private citizens throughout the United States for distribution to foreign countries that need aid.
