The senior U.S. military officer arrived here today for a visit that will include a meeting with Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III.
Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will also meet during his visit with Lt. Gen. Jessie Dellosa, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff.
The chairman will then participate in a roundtable discussion at the Department of National Defense, and he will later place a wreath at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. The 152-acre cemetery is the resting place of 17,201 U.S. service members killed in World War II, most of whom died during operations in New Guinea and the Philippines.
Marine Corps Col. David A. Lapan, who is Dempsey’s spokesman and is traveling with him, said the chairman is visiting the United States’ long-time ally as part of a weeklong trip focusing on the Asia-Pacific and aimed at engaging with key partners in the region.
As the U.S. strategy rebalancing defense efforts to this part of the world takes shape, Lapan said, the chairman is making it a priority to engage with key partners and allies to consult on furthering military-to-military relationships in the region.
Dempsey left Singapore earlier today, after attending the 11th annual Asia security conference, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue. At the conference, he served as a senior member of the U.S. delegation led by Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta.
