The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will travel this weekend to Israel and Jordan.
A senior Defense Department official said the focus of Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey's trip will be to discuss issues of mutual interest with his counterparts and to continue building on these important defense relationships.
In Israel, the official said, the chairman expects to discuss the unwavering U.S. commitment to Israel's security, including potential threats from Iran, the ongoing civil war in Syria, and uncertainty in the Sinai.
While in Jordan, the official added, Dempsey plans to visit U.S. troops and to gain a richer understanding of how the conflict in Syria is affecting Jordan and the region.
The general last visited Israel in October, and his last trip to Jordan was in April 2012.
