STATEN ISLAND, New York. — Lt.j.g. Katie E. Burkhart, a native of Dell Rapids, S.D., is assigned to USS Philippine Sea homported in Mayport, Fla.
The ship, which recently completed an extensive overhaul of the combat and engineering control systems, docked for Fleet Week New York before continuing to make preparation for an upcoming Persian Gulf deployment to defend against those who would threaten our nation's interests.
Burkhart, who is the ship's new Navigator, is the daughter of Bruce and Julie Burkhart of Dell Rapids, attended Dell Rapids St. Mary High School and University of Pennsylvania.
"It's a great opportunity for the community to show their support for us and for us to show why we love our jobs," said Burkhart. When we wear our uniforms out in town and everyone wants our pictures and thanks us for our service, it's a strong reminder of the importance of the job we do.
Burkhart was commissioned through the University of Pennsylvania ROTC in 2007 and has served as Strike and Combat Information Center Officer on USS Hopper.
Approximately 3,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman are participating in the 23rd Fleet Week New York, which is taking place through June 2. Fleet Week has been New York City's celebration of the sea services since 1984.
