The Agriculture Department’s annual “Feds Feed Families” food drive began June 1, and officials have requested the Defense Department’s help with logistical support and food donations.

The campaign, which runs through August, is a voluntary effort undertaken by federal employees to bring nonperishable food items to their offices for distribution to local food banks.

In a memo to Defense Department leaders, Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work noted that the 2013 food drive was overwhelmingly successful, as food donations across the federal government totaled 9 million pounds, with DOD alone contributing more than 1.9 million pounds of food.

In the national capital region, food will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank, which serves more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens and other service organizations in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland. Similar organizations in other areas will partner with local federal offices and military installations to receive donations.

“We once again will expand the DOD effort to a nationwide campaign, donating to food banks across the country,” Work wrote.
